Join Scenic Aperture for a high-altitude Colorado Wildflower Photography Workshop in the San Juan mountains of southwest Colorado. Participants will learn advanced techniques of wildflower and landscape photography from Frank Comisar, an internationally collected nature photographer.
Summer in the San Juan mountains is a stunning combination of wildflowers, alpine lakes, and snow capped mountains. Summer comes late above 10,000′. But by July, the San Juan’s alpine and subalpine meadows are bursting with color from countless varieties of wildflowers. Rocky mountain columbine, larkspur, indian paintbrush, alpine phlox, glacier lilies and elephants head are just a few of the species we are likely to see during this wildflower photography workshop.
This region offers a wildflower experience second to none.
Getting there is half the fun!
This is not your grandmother’s garden party! Just getting to these alpine meadows, some above 12,000′, is an insurmountable challenge for many photographers. But we’ve got you covered! We make getting there half the fun! Experienced off-road drivers equipped with high-clearance 4×4 vehicles will transport us safely to and from each alpine shoot. Our route will include remote forest service roads and old mining tracks originally cut to move gold and silver ore from the mines to regional smelters.
Speaking of gold mines . . .
We’ll see remains of this historic mining culture along the way. Therefore we’ll make a few side trips to photograph abandoned mine structures and ghost towns once occupied by brave souls seeking fortunes over a century ago.
Make Better Photographs
We are passionate about making great photographs. Our goal is to help you do the same. We’ll make sure you get to the right place at the right time. To maximize photographic opportunities, our itinerary will be flexible to make the most of changing weather and lighting conditions. Join Frank to visit his favorite locations and to learn advanced techniques of landscape photography and digital post-processing. The San Juan Mountains are one of North America’s best places for alpine wildflowers. Sign up now!
Frank Comisar is a full-time resident of Durango, CO. He has been exploring southwest Colorado for years. Scenic Aperture and Frank’s gallery are located on Durango’s historic Main Street. The gallery showcases his photography of the Four-Corners region.
Special Note: This workshop will be based in historic Silverton, Colorado. Silverton is nestled in a stunning valley surrounded by dramatic peaks of the San Juan Mountains. With a population of only 600 permanent residents, Silverton boasts a rugged mining history contrasted with Victorian charm. Silverton is a jumping off point for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers from all over the world. As a special treat, lodging will provided at the newly remodeled Grand Imperial Hotel which first opened for business in 1883.
