Bosque del Apache

Join Scenic Aperture for their annual Bosque del Apache photography workshop. Bosque del Apache is one of the premier bird photography locations in the U.S. The New Mexico light, specifically at sunrise and sunset, is very special. Add in tens of thousands of sandhill cranes and snow geese to the desert landscape and you have the ingredients for a special photography experience.

Hone your birds-in-flight photography skills with Frank Comisar, an award winning photographer and Scenic Aperture’s founder. In addition to birds-in-flight, we will also have ample opportunities for contextual wildlife landscapes in the high desert of New Mexico. This Bosque del Apache photography workshop will be based in Socorro, NM and is limited to only eight participants.

We will start our days before sunrise as thousands of snow geese roost in the area’s ponds. As sunrise approaches the decibel level increases as the geese prepare for their daily departure to feed in the nearby fields. Suddenly and without warning, the geese blast-off in an audio and visual explosion that must be seen and heard to fully appreciate. After the geese blast-off, we will immediately turn our attention to the more subtle, but equally intriguing sandhill cranes that winter in this high desert oasis.

Afternoon shoots will include both geese and cranes. However, during the afternoon shoots we will spend considerably more time working on birds-in-flight technique. From several ponds in and around the refuge, we will shoot cranes and geese as they pass just a few feet above our heads. We will work on technical aspects of BIF as well as the artistic aspects which include lighting and background considerations.
